McAndrews’ Client Stryker Corporation Awarded Nearly a Quarter Billion Dollars Following a Jury’s $70 Million Verdict in a Case of Patent Infringement

In Stryker Corp. et al. v. Zimmer, Civil Action No. 10-CV-1223, (W.D. Mich 2013), a jury found for 
McAndrews' client Stryker Corporation (NYSE: SYK), one of the world's most innovative medical device 
companies. The jury concluded that Zimmer willfully infringed three patents related to pulsed lavage 
irrigation systems, which are commonly used in orthopedic surgeries and wound management, and 
awarded $70 million in damages to Stryker. Post-verdict, all of Stryker's post-trial motions pleaded by 
McAndrews were granted, including its request for treble damages of the jury's original verdict and for 
supplemental damages in the amount of $2.35 million, a motion for an award of attorneys' fees, as well as 
Stryker's motion for a permanent injunction against Zimmer. While the case covered a number of different 
and complex issues, McAndrews was able to turn the $70 million jury verdict into a post-trial award in 
excess of $248 million.

Now listed as the fifth largest IP verdict and 25th largest among all top verdicts in the United States in the 
National Law Journal's 2013 "Top 100 Verdicts List," McAndrews' win for Stryker exemplifies the firm's
