Four McAndrews Attorneys Recognized Among the World’s Leading Patent Practitioners

CHICAGO, IL – June 13, 2013 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy announced today that founding partner and Chairman Timothy J. Malloy, along with shareholders Herbert D. Hart III,Edward A. Mas II and Nabeela Rasheed, Ph.D., were featured in Intellectual Asset Management magazine’s (IAM) “IAM 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners.” All four attorneys, who are listed in the guide’s litigation and prosecution categories, have contributed to the firm’s “fine reputation, thanks in large part to its powerful performances in patent litigation.”
To compile the rankings, IAM conducted almost 1,000 telephone interviews over a five-month period with a broad range of IP attorneys and in-house counsel in order to identify leaders in the intellectual property field. Attorneys only qualified for the listing when they received substantial positive feedback.
According to the publisher, Malloy is touted as one “one of the highest quality lawyers out there,” while Hart is described as “supremely well grounded in the practical consequences of USPTO rules with a nuanced understanding of how the judges approach things.” Mas received favorable reviews that called him an “experienced, smart, aggressive and effective advocate.” In regards to prosecution, Rasheed was described by IAM as “sharp as a tack in the biotechnology area and knows how to take care of clients.” Additionally, the ranking called the firm’s medical device work “exceptional,” and also noted that it has had great success in computer technology and electronics cases.
Nationally recognized for his intellectual property litigation successes, Timothy J. Malloy has been involved in numerous multi-million-dollar verdicts, awards and settlements, and has served as lead counsel in IP-related trials throughout the country. His professional highlights include arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of Eli Lilly and Company, the leading case directed to the scope of patent protection for medical devices. Malloy has been listed in the Best Lawyers guide every year since 1999, and is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an honorary society of trial lawyers comprised of less than one-half of one percent of all American lawyers.
Herbert D. Hart III has significant experience in litigation before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), specifically in life science and chemical technologies. He is a frequent speaker on PTAB trial practice and he has served as an expert witness on interference practice. Hart serves on the AIPLA Special Task Force on AIA Rulemaking and he was also appointed to the six-member IPO/ABA/AIPLA Expert Committee on Regulations for Conducting New PGR/IPR Procedures (the “Gang of 6”). He is widely published in the field of intellectual property law and has provided commentary in numerous legal, business and scientific publications. Recently, Hart has spoken before clients, associations, and other audiences regarding rulemaking under the post grant provisions of the AIA. He also is an associate editor and contributing author of the ABA book, ANDA Litigation: Strategies and Tactics for Pharmaceutical Patent Litigators.
Edward A. Mas II has worked with clients in a wide range of technologies, with a special emphasis on medical devices. His practice focuses on patent litigation and other complex technology-related litigation. One of his professional highlights includes securing a $166 million dollar victory for Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Inc., which rates among the top patent damages awards of all time. In addition to medical devices, Mas’s litigation practice has involved such diverse technologies as antibody expression systems, barcode scanners and printers, bicycle equipment and automotive sensors. Mas also handles patent reexaminations and other proceedings in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, client counseling, licensing, clearance opinions and portfolio management.
Nabeela Rasheed, Ph.D., concentrates her practice on the acquisition and enforcement of intellectual property rights for her biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients. She provides counsel in all areas of global intellectual property portfolio management, including patent prosecution, validity and infringement opinions, patent opposition proceedings, reexamination, protests and interferences. With her Ph.D. in biochemistry, Dr. Rasheed focuses on biotechnology and traditional pharmaceutical and medical technologies, including recombinant proteins and methods of production and use of such compositions, humanized antibodies, diagnostics and therapeutic formulations.
