McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd., a leading national firm focusing on intellectual property and technology law, recently announced it has selected Latif G. Alashe, a student at the University of Virginia School of Law, as the recipient of the 2016 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship. Alashe was selected from a competitive list of applicants from some of the most renowned law schools in the country.

Alashe recently completed his first year at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he is an active member of the Black Law Students Association. Prior to law school, Alashe received a B.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where, on top of his rigorous course load, he was also a captain of the University of Michigan Men’s Varsity soccer team. After graduating cum laude from the University of Michigan, Alashe worked as a Supplier Quality Engineer at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). There, he led a cross-functional team that featured representatives from engineering, purchasing and the supply base to deliver high-quality products to FCA’s assembly plants.

“Latif impressed us with his industry experience, stellar educational background, and remarkable work ethic,” said McAndrews, Held Malloy Shareholder Sharon A. Hwang, who spearheaded the launch of the Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship. “McAndrews takes very seriously our role in improving diversity in the traditionally non-diverse field of patent law, and we are delighted to welcome Latif to our office and to teach him how to build successful business strategies for our clients – from bet-the-company litigation to day-to-day IP management.”

McAndrews’ Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship is part of McAndrews’ long-standing commitment to fostering a diverse work environment in the field of IP law. As the recipient of the Fellowship, Alashe will receive a $5,000 stipend and a paid summer clerkship with McAndrews. The Fellowship is open to first-year law students attending an ABA-accredited law school, and who possess a diverse background and a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. Alashe will gain extensive experience on a wide range of IP and complex technology matters and will be mentored by a senior member of the firm’s Diversity Committee. He will also be eligible for a second clerkship in the firm’s summer associates program following completion of the Fellowship.
