CHICAGO, IL – February 17, 2014 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd., which ranks among the nation’s most highly regarded intellectual property and complex technology law firms, recently announced the appointment of two of its Partners to the firm’s Board of Directors. In addition, McAndrews has elevated three of its Associates to Partner.

The new Board members are:

Aaron F. Barkoff, Ph.D., a patent litigator who specializes in pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent law.  Barkoff has impressive trial experience in Hatch-Waxman litigation, representing clients that range from the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies to smaller, generic drug companies. His strong technical background in biochemistry, combined with his deep understanding of FDA regulatory issues, allows him to assist clients with patent litigation strategy for their new products, as well as related regulatory matters.  Barkoff’s counsel in relation to FDA regulations includes Orange Book patent listings, patent term extensions under Section 156 and patent certification strategies.

Sarah A. Biggs, who practices in a broad range of intellectual property areas, focusing primarily on patent and trademark opinion work, prosecution, litigation and client counseling.  Biggs has extensive experience in various industries, but has particular knowledge in the medical device, nutritional, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Clients rely on her to provide counsel on potential risk and risk management strategies, and to effectively and efficiently manage and develop their IP portfolios. Additionally, Biggs prepares and prosecutes domestic and foreign patent and trademark registration applications in a wide variety of technical areas.

The new McAndrews Partners are:

Peter J. Lish, whose practice includes a wide range of intellectual property areas.  While Lish has significant experience in intellectual property litigation, he currently concentrates on preparing and prosecuting patent applications focused on a variety of complex technologies, particularly in the chemical, petrochemical, energy, and mechanical fields. For a multinational oil and gas company, Lish manages and continues to develop a global portfolio of more than 100 patent applications around the world. He also assists both large and small clients with freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and non-infringement opinions covering both utility and design patents. Prior to law school, Lish worked as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Ryan Jungels, whose practice includes all aspects of intellectual property law, with an emphasis on patent litigation.  His work in this area has spanned a wide variety of technologies in the medical device, telecommunications and mobile electronics industries. Jungels’ litigation experience covers all aspects of dispute resolution, from pre-litigation consultation to trial and appellate work.  He regularly assesses and reviews the legal aspects of his clients’ intellectual property, designs litigation strategies, manages all aspects of fact discovery, takes and defends depositions, and prepares and argues motions, expert discovery and trial preparation. Previously, Jungels completed an internship at Caterpillar Inc., where he designed components for large wheel loaders as a member of the sheet metal and cooling group.

Rami Moussa, who focuses his practice on strategic patent portfolio development, with an emphasis on patent prosecution, primarily in the electrical and computer technology industries.  In assisting clients in the development of patent portfolios, Moussa has drafted and/or prosecuted more than 400 patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in such fields as existing and next generation wired and wireless communications ; computer hardware and software; networking; imaging, video, and audio processing; and cryptography. Prior to joining McAndrews, Moussa worked at Motorola, primarily developing software solutions for several standard-based (3GPP) features and functionalities.

“These five individuals, who we consider to be some of the most excellent IP and technology-focused attorneys in the profession, deserve recognition for their accomplishments, as well as their client service, attention to detail and sound strategic counsel,” said McAndrews, Held & Malloy Shareholder and Firm President Robert A. Surrette.  “The high quality work and successful outcomes they consistently achieve only confirm that they will continue to exceed expectations in their new roles within our firm and the practice of IP law.”
