McAndrews Associate Invited to Present at International Institute for the Sociology of Law Workshop in Spain

CHICAGO, IL – May 13, 2014 – Caroline A. Teichner, an associate at McAndrews, Held & Malloy, has been invited to present her research paper, entitled “Tocqueville’s Likely Take On The ‘Tweeting Juror’ Problem,” at a workshop hosted by the International Institute for the Sociology of Law (IISL) in Oñati, Spain, June 12-13, 2014. From the list of preliminary participants, which features scholars from the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, South America, and East Asia, Teichner is one of the youngest professionals invited, as well as one of the few currently practicing attorneys.
The IISL workshop, entitled “Juries and Mixed Tribunals Across the Globe: New Developments, Common Challenges and Future Decisions,” is designed to provide attendees with strategic and practical information about practices and innovations of jury systems around the globe so they can consider whether these practices can be introduced in their own countries. The two-day workshop is comprised of several panels, including “Jurors in the Age of the Internet,” “Reinvigorating the Vanishing Jury,” and “Lay Participation on Mixed Tribunals,” which will focus on new jury developments worldwide.
Teichner’s presentation will explore various proposed solutions for dealing with jurors’ use of social media sites to blog, post, and tweet about their experiences during trial. In particular, Teichner will evaluate these proposed solutions from the theoretical perspective of Alexis de Tocqueville, a French political thinker and historian who wrote in the early nineteenth century about the American jury system, envisioning the jury as both a “free school” for providing citizens with legal education and a “political institution” for allowing citizens to participate in self-government.
