McAndrews, Held & Malloy Shareholder Alejandro Menchaca to Speak at the Hispanic National Bar Association’s 41st Annual Convention

08.30.16

Shareholder Alejandro Menchaca will present at the Hispanic National Bar Association’s (HNBA’s) Annual Convention in Chicago, September 7-10, 2016. Each year, the convention attracts hundreds of attorneys, judges and law students from across the country, including public officials, business leaders and General Counsels from many Fortune 100 and other corporations. This year’s theme is “Empowering Leaders,” and the comprehensive program includes: CLE panels with leading practitioners; networking events and workshops; and the largest Hispanic Career Fair in the country.

On September 9, Menchaca will speak on a panel titled, “Alice May I?: Navigating Through The Challenges Created By Alice v. CLS Bank.” According to the program book, the Supreme Court’s decision in Alice v. CLS Bank changed the IP landscape, creating challenges for companies to obtain and enforce their patent rights. Panelists will:

  • Address how those challenges are affecting innovation and the ability to compete in the marketplace, particularly in the areas of software and biotechnology;
  • Give an overview of the recent case law that addresses Alice, as well as the USPTO’s guidelines in response to Alice;
  • Provide in-house and outside counsel perspectives on how to navigate through the case law; and
  • Share USPTO guidelines to secure patents and successfully compete in the marketplace.

Other panelists include Erica Navar, Esq., Patent Examiner, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office; Jennifer Trusso Salinas, Partner, Troutman Sanders LLP; and Wendy Choi, Partner, Ballard Spahr LLP.
