McAndrews, Held & Malloy Shareholder Christopher V. Carani Keynote Speaker at Annual WIPLA Holiday Dinner

On Wednesday night, McAndrews, Held & Malloy Shareholder Christopher V. Carani spoke at the annual WIPLA Holiday Dinner, giving a presentation titled “Industrial (Design) Revolution: From Spoons to Smartphones.”
Carani’s presentation focused on the 1871 U.S. Supreme Court design patent case Gorham v. White (an IP case involving the design of spoon handles) and the on-going battle of Apple v. Samsung. Carani also discussed recent developments in design patent jurisprudence, and gave insights on how to protect both traditional industrial designs and today’s graphic user interfaces and icons.
Carani is nationally recognized in the field of design law, which includes the protection and enforcement of product design through the use of copyrights, trade dress and design patents. He was included in IAM Magazine’s 2016 “IAM Patent 1000,” and referred to as one of the U.S.’s “pre-eminent design law experts.” He has also published and lectured extensively on the topic. Carani is on faculty at Northwestern University School of Law as an Adjunct Professor teaching IP law, and conferred his J.D. from The Law School at The University of Chicago. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Marquette University. Away from the law, Carani is a studied jazz musician playing upright bass on the Chicago jazz circuit.
