McAndrews, Held & Malloy Shareholder Christopher V. Carani Served as a US Delegate on Protection of Graphical User Interfaces at AIPPI World Congress in Sydney, Australia

On Monday October 16th, McAndrews, Held & Malloy Shareholder Christopher V. Carani served as a U.S. delegate on the study question “Protections of Graphical User Interfaces” at AIPPI World Congress in Sydney, Australia.

The study focused on the importance of graphical user interfaces (“GUIs”) in relation to all types of computing devices, particularly mobile devices. The study questioned whether various IP rights may protect different aspects of GUIs and which protection would be most relevant. A resolution was passed by AIPPI.

Carani is nationally recognized in the field of design law, which includes the protection and enforcement of product design through the use of copyrights, trade dress and design patents. He was included in IAM Magazine’s 2016 “IAM Patent 1000,” and referred to as one of the U.S.’s “pre-eminent design law experts.” He has also published and lectured extensively on the topic. Carani is on faculty at Northwestern University School of Law as an Adjunct Professor teaching IP law, and conferred his J.D. from The Law School at The University of Chicago. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Marquette University. Away from the law, Carani is a studied jazz musician playing upright bass on the Chicago jazz circuit.
