03.17.15

McAndrews, Held & Malloy shareholders Troy A. Groetken and Thomas J. Wimbiscus were invited to speak at a seminar on IP management in Munich, Germany, on March 19, 2015. The event is hosted by ZSP Patentanwälte PartG mbB and will provide attendees, which include several major European corporations, with developments and considerations in IP management strategies.

In light of the recent Alice v. CLS Bank decision, which focused on patentable subject matter (e.g. patent eligibility), Wimbiscus and Groetken will specifically discuss advanced IPR procedures, as well as offensive and defensive strategies in litigation and portfolio planning.

Wimbiscus will present the session titled “Challenging U.S. Patents by Inter Partes Review.” He has more than 30 years of experience and practices in all areas of intellectual property litigation, as well as the acquisition and management of patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret protection. He has appeared in more than 90 litigations, covering a diverse range of technologies, and has served as lead counsel in more than 50 IPRs. His litigation successes include numerous multi-million dollar awards and settlements, as well as patent infringement victories before the U.S. International Trade Commission. Wimbiscus‘ experience also encompasses the acquisition and maintenance of patents, trademarks, and copyrights. He served as co-trial counsel in a four-week jury trial resulting in a patent infringement award of more $80 million, with a finding of willful infringement (reversed in part and remanded).

Groetken will present the session, “Strategic U.S. Patent Portfolio Development.” He has more than 18 years of experience in the intellectual property field and more than 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnological and chemical fields.  As a registered U.S. patent practitioner, Groetken is considered by his clients and peers as a “trusted and ‘go-to’ IP source” who regularly counsels international and Fortune 100 and 500 companies regarding advanced patent litigation and procurement matters; advises upon global licensing, acquisition and divestiture issues coordinated with client-centered business modeling and approaches; and analyzes and addresses complex global intellectual property transactional issues, including due diligence analysis, valuation assessment, competitive landscape review, white space analysis, opinion development and global portfolio management. Prior to practicing patent law, Groetken worked as a clinical consultant pharmacist.
