McAndrews, Held & Malloy Announces Six New Board Members, Two New Partners


 

CHICAGO, IL – January 26, 2011 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd., one of the nation’s preeminent law firms specializing in intellectual property and complex technology law, recently elevated six of the firm’s veteran attorneys to its Board of Directors and promoted two attorneys to partner.  

“We are thrilled to recognize these highly accomplished attorneys for their outstanding work,” said John J. Held, a founding partner at McAndrews.  “We look forward to their continued contributions to our clients and to the success of our firm.”  

Following are the new board members at McAndrews, Held & Malloy:

Oggie Beremski’s practice focuses on international and domestic procurement of patents, trademarks and copyrights, as well as license agreements relating to them.  He has successfully prosecuted numerous patents in the electrical and software fields, with emphasis on telecommunications, video processing and wireless technology.  Prior to joining McAndrews, Beremski was a corporate counsel for a U.S. subsidiary of NEC Corporation, where he gained valuable knowledge and experience in the areas of IP/technology licensing, IP litigation, IP infringement and invalidity opinions, corporate restructuring and mergers and acquisitions.  He is member of the bars of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Illinois Supreme Court.  Beremski is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

William B. Gont practices in all areas of intellectual property law, with an emphasis on patent litigation and prosecution.  His practice has involved a variety of technologies, including surgical instruments, medical devices, gaming systems, waste gasification, keypad design, fitness equipment and lighting systems.  Gont also has extensive engineering experience in the mechanical systems industry, having previously worked for The Lincoln Electric Company and Productigear, Inc.  He is a member of the bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Dennis H. Jaskoviak Jr. has built a diverse practice that includes patent litigation and prosecution, and appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and the Federal Circuit Appeals Court.  He has experience in a variety of technological areas, including medical devices and methods, oil exploration, nuclear power generation, steam turbine drives, turbine generators, fresh water distillation, heat transfer devices, refuse collection devices, friction clutches and chain and sprocket drives.  He is a member of the bars of the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the State of Illinois.  Jaskoviak is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Deborah A. Laughton focuses on all aspects of intellectual property law, with an emphasis on patent litigation.  She has particular litigation experience in the field of medical devices, including such diverse technologies as orthopedic implants and components, surgical suction irrigators, pediatric hospital beds, nerve imaging technology, drug-eluting vascular stents and medical image capture systems.  She has also been involved with drafting opinions, due diligence investigations and appeals before the Federal Circuit.  Laughton is a member of the bars of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and Western District of Michigan. She is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.

Yufeng (Ethan) Ma counsels clients in the United States and globally on intellectual property matters.  His clients range from start-ups to Fortune Global 500 companies in industries including chemicals, petrochemicals, industrial products, consumer products, information technology, electronics, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.  Ma provides a full range of intellectual property legal services with focus on intellectual property litigation, both before the U.S. International Trade Commission and in federal courts.  He is a member of the bars of the Illinois Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  He is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Shawn L. Peterson’s practice focuses primarily on the strategic development of patent protection, including patent prosecution and patent acquisition, as well as numerous patent analysis activities, including claim interpretation, patent infringement analysis and patent validity analysis.  He also assists clients with identifying patentable inventions.  He has handled matters involving technologies including mobility, networking, wireless communication, power management, computer hardware and software, user interface, digital and analog control, power electronics, electric machines, sensors, robotics, electromechanical systems, computer simulation and electronic gaming, as well as a number of manufacturing technologies.  Prior to his law practice, Peterson gained substantial engineering experience in a variety of engineering disciplines while employed with the Motorola Government and Cellular groups.  He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Following are the new partners at McAndrews, Held & Malloy:

Wayne H. Bradley concentrates primarily on patent prosecution, due diligence and litigation, working on all aspects of technologies related to the wireless communications industry.  Prior to joining McAndrews, he gained significant engineering experience working for Motorola’s Corporate Research Division and PrairieComm. During his engineering career, he developed commercial products for the cellular industry and gained first-hand experience designing hardware and programming software for IS-136, GSM, EDGE, CDMA and UMTS.  Bradley is also the named inventor on 12 patents related to cellular systems.  He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  

Stephanie Samz focuses on patent litigation and works with a wide array of technologies, with an emphasis on medical devices.  She has worked with such diverse medical technologies as bone cleaning technology, drug-eluting stents, fracture fixation systems and surgical spinal procedures.  Her litigation work includes pre-suit investigation and assessment, motion practice, all phases of discovery and trial preparation.  She has been involved in numerous appeals before the Federal Circuit and has experience in drafting appellate briefs and preparing for oral arguments.  She also advises clients on trademark and copyright matters.  Samz is a member of the bars of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
