McAndrews, Held & Malloy Attorney Sharon Hwang Named One of National Asian Pacific American Bar Association’s 2007 ‘Best Lawyers Under 40’

CHICAGO, IL – Nov. 28, 2007 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy shareholder Sharon Hwang was named one of the 2007 “Best Lawyers Under 40” by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).  Hwang and 18 other 2007 “Best Lawyers” were honored at NAPABA’s 19th Annual Convention in Las Vegas in November.

Honorees were chosen by a NAPABA selection committee from a competitive field of attorneys in multiple practice areas.  They were selected for attaining prominence in their respective legal fields and for exhibiting steadfast commitment to community and public service, particularly in the Asian Pacific American community.  NAPABA is the national association of Asian Pacific American attorneys, judges, law professors and law students, and represents the interests of more than 40,000 attorneys and 50 local Asian Pacific American bar associations.

“Sharon’s selection as one of NAPABA’s ‘Best Lawyers Under 40’ is reflective of her tremendous work as a top intellectual property attorney and her longstanding commitment to community service,” said Jim Goh, chair of NAPABA’s “Best Lawyers Under 40” Selection Committee.  “We congratulate Sharon and all of this year’s honorees as being among the best young attorneys in the nation.”

Hwang practices intellectual property law with particular emphasis on patent litigation and intellectual property counseling.  She has played major roles in multi-million-dollar patent litigation cases and has extensive experience in federal trial and appellate courts on matters involving patent, trademark, unfair competition and antitrust claims.  She also has taken the lead in preparing briefs in both the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.  Her practice spans such diverse technologies as orthopedic implants, implantable defibrillators, electro-optical printing systems, surgical navigation systems, drift tube linear accelerators, digital cellular telephones, laparoscopic suction irrigators, interactive television systems and railcar components.

At McAndrews, Hwang heads up the firm’s marketing committee, is a founding member of the diversity committee and serves on the executive recruiting committee.  She also spearheaded the launch of the firm’s Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship to promote diversity in the field of intellectual property law.  Outside of the firm, Hwang serves as secretary for the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Chicago Area.  She is a past board member of the Organization of Chinese Americans Greater Chicago Chapter, previously provided pro bono legal services to Boston’s Chinatown community, and has also volunteered with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services.  She also represents McAndrews in the Chicago Coalition of Women’s Initiatives to help promote the advancement of Chicago women attorneys.  As a law student at Boston College Law School, she was the managing editor of the Uniform Commercial Code Reporter-Digest, Boston College’s commercial law review.

“This recognition draws attention to Sharon’s many accomplishments as an attorney who is deeply committed to her firm, her profession and her volunteer work on behalf of the Asian Pacific American community and beyond,” said McAndrews founding partner and board chairman George P. McAndrews.  “We value Sharon’s contributions in serving our clients, as a leader of our firm, and as a driving force behind our diversity efforts and programs.”
