McAndrews is pleased to announce it has selected Autumn Schmidt, a student at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, as the deserving recipient of the 2018 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship. As part of McAndrews’ long-standing commitment to fostering a diverse work environment, the firm offers annually the Fellowship to a qualified first-year student of an ABA-accredited law school.

At Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, Schmidt is a member of the Women’s Leadership Coalition and a 1L Representative for OUTLaw. Prior to law school, she graduated from Hamline University with a B.S. in Physics and a B.A. in English. While an undergrad, Schmidt served as a research assistant with Hamline’s Physics department, studying the motion of helicoseirs. After graduating from Hamline, Schmidt worked at Epic, a healthcare software company, helping to develop software used by the majority of physicians in the United States.

Recipients of the Fellowship receive a $5,000 stipend and a paid summer clerkship with McAndrews. The Fellowship is open to first-year law students attending an ABA-accredited law school, who possess a diverse background and a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. Fellows gain extensive experience on a wide range of IP and complex technology matters, are mentored by a senior member of the firm’s Diversity Committee, and are eligible for a second clerkship in the firm’s summer associates program following completion of the Fellowship.

McAndrews has been recognized as one of the “Top 100 Firms for Minority Attorneys” by Law360 for their minority representation and diversity initiatives.
