Chemical

Chemical industry clients have been an essential part of McAndrews since the day we opened our doors. For more than thirty years, we have represented clients operating in a broad range of chemical industry subspecialties, including biotechnology, industrial chemicals, the personal care industry, healthcare, petrochemicals and many more. The chemical industry group is one of our firm’s largest, and many of our attorneys have advanced degrees in disciplines like chemical engineering, materials science, biochemistry and analytical chemistry.

In addition to our technical and legal qualifications, however, we believe our approach to representing clients also distinguishes us. At McAndrews, we do not view client relationships as transactions or revenue sources – we view them as long-term working partnerships. We have represented many of our chemical industry clients for decades, and that is not a coincidence. We emphasize continuity and strive for a deep understanding of each client’s priorities, objectives and competitive landscape.

By so doing, our attorneys develop the ability to deliver strategies and solutions that mirror each client’s goals, and to provide legal services efficiently, effectively and seamlessly across the firm. As an example of this, one of our senior partners recently described his delight when instead of calling him, clients came to rely on and called younger McAndrews attorneys who had joined our team, began working with him, and earned his trust.

Our chemical industry work serves clients of every size, from global conglomerates to regional companies to innovative startups. We also frequently represent clients in international proceedings, often partnering with counsel in Europe, Asia or elsewhere. Regardless of the size of the client, or its location in the corporate lifecycle, intellectual property protection and management is typically of critical importance. In keeping with our relationship-based approach to client service, a McAndrews team can provide representation and counsel for virtually any situation that may arise.

These include patent prosecution – drafting patent applications and managing them through to issuance and rendering opinions on validity, infringement and freedom to operate. We also regularly challenge and defend patents in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and the district courts throughout the United States. From a transactional perspective, we counsel clients and perform due diligence, valuation and strategic analysis. We also assist with acquisitions and ensure that portfolios are strong and diverse, with meaningful patent protection in key jurisdictions. On behalf of chemical industry clients, we also regularly draft and negotiate contracts, including agreements with respect to licensing, development, joint ventures and technology transfer.

Our chemical industry practitioners have both impeccable credentials as legal practitioners and deep technical expertise. As practitioners, our expertise includes work in both traditional areas of chemistry and the exciting work being done in innovative fields like biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. But regardless of the subject matter, our fundamental goal hasn’t changed since we opened our doors three decades ago – knowing your company, your business, your people, your market and above all, your technology.

"Your firm's management style is aggressive, organized, well-directed to common objectives, and it has a shared purpose and goals. I was further impressed with your firm's sense of communication and urgency. These are all traits of successful companies, and I do not wonder why yours follows this pattern. I want to thank you and your entire team for their energy, enthusiasm and hard work."
