McAndrews Shareholder Sharon Hwang Receives Leadership Award from Asian American Bar Association of Greater Chicago

CHICAGO, IL – July 28, 2015 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy shareholder Sharon A. Hwang has been selected as the recipient of the 2015 Sandra R. Otaka Leadership Award by the Asian American Bar Association of Greater Chicago (AABA-Chicago). Judge Otaka was the first Asian-American to be elected a Cook County judge.
Each year, the award recognizes the achievements, commitment and leadership of lawyers who have paved the way for the advancement of other Asian Pacific American attorneys. Recipients have successful careers and made contributions that demonstrate vision, courage and tenacity, and which have resulted in substantial and lasting contributions to the Asian Pacific American community in the greater Chicagoland area.
At McAndrews, Hwang focuses her practice on patent litigation and intellectual property counseling. She represents patentees and defendants in high-stakes patent litigation in federal courts and in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Her practice spans such diverse technologies as medical devices, implantable defibrillators, orthopedic implants, drug eluting stents, surgical navigation systems, drift tube linear accelerators, digital cellular telephones, interactive television systems, and complex communication systems. In 2007, Hwang was selected as one of the “Best Lawyers Under 40” in the United States by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
Hwang was recently elected to McAndrews’ Executive Committee, and she spearheaded the launch of the firm’s Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship, which encourages diversity in the field of intellectual property law. Sharon is a Fellow of Leadership Greater Chicago, and she currently serves on the Boards of the Chicago Committee, the Chicago Legal Clinic, the Chinese American Bar Association, and the Asian American Bar Association Law Foundation. She previously served as the President of the AABA-Chicago.
Hwang will receive the Award at the association’s 28th Annual Installation event on Thursday, August 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hotel Allegro.
