McAndrews Shareholder Sharon A. Hwang Appointed to the Board of the Chicago Committee

12.02.13

McAndrews, Held & Malloy shareholder Sharon A. Hwang was recently named a Board Member of the Chicago Committee. Founded in 1987 by 10 minority attorneys, the Chicago Committee is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting racial and ethnic diversity in the legal profession. As a Board Member, Hwang will help inform the group’s programs and initiatives designed to advance diversity in the Chicago legal community.

“I am honored to be appointed to a leadership role within such an important and effective organization,” said Hwang. “As a member of McAndrews’ Diversity Committee, diversity in the workplace is extremely important to me. I look forward to fostering opportunities in the larger legal community.”

The Chicago Committee was initially created to provide networking opportunities and support for minority lawyers in order to alleviate feelings of isolation at large law firms in the city. At its inception, the organization focused on hosting an annual gathering for lawyers and summer associates. However, in the past 26 years, the organization has greatly expanded its scope, concentrating its efforts on providing substantive programming for its membership, their attorneys and the broader legal community.

At McAndrews, Hwang focuses her practice on patent litigation and intellectual property counseling.  She represents patentees and defendants in high-stakes patent litigation in federal courts and in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.  Her practice spans such diverse technologies as medical devices, implantable defibrillators, orthopedic implants, drug eluting stents, surgical navigation systems, drift tube linear accelerators, digital cellular telephones, interactive television systems, and complex communication systems.  In 2007, Hwang was selected as one of the “Best Lawyers Under 40” in the United States by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

Hwang was recently elected to McAndrews’ Executive Committee, and she spearheaded the launch of the firm’s Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship, which encourages diversity in the field of intellectual property law.  Sharon is a Fellow of Leadership Greater Chicago, and she currently serves on the Boards of the Chicago Committee, the Chicago Legal Clinic, the Chinese American Bar Association, and the Asian American Bar Association Law Foundation.  She previously served as the President of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Chicago Area.
