Three McAndrews Attorneys Appointed as Associates

CHICAGO, IL – October 3, 2013 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy announced today that Dunstan H. Barnes, Ph.D., Michael J. Carrozza and Robert F. Kappers joined the firm as associates. These additions bolster McAndrews’, a large and highly specialized intellectual property boutique, ranks to nearly 80 attorneys. 

Barnes, Carrozza and Kappers, who all have educational backgrounds in engineering, first joined McAndrews, Held & Malloy as law clerks in 2011. Since then, they have been integral in helping build and execute strategies designed to achieve clients’ business goals. They have gained considerable experience in a wide range of technological fields, and worked in numerous areas of IP law, including patent litigation, prosecution, copyright and trademark litigation, trade secrets and transactional work.

Dunstan H. Barnes, Ph.D., graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was President of the Intellectual Property Law Society, a Notes & Comments Editor for the Chicago-Kent Law Review, and a Submissions Editor for the Journal of Intellectual Property. Prior to law school, Barnes earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science & Metallurgy from the University of Cambridge. His doctoral research explored the development and enhancement of biomimetic calcium phosphate coatings applied to the endplate surfaces of artificial polymeric spinal disc devices. Barnes also assisted in a collaborative research project with the National Metallurgical Laboratory in Jamshedpur, India, that focused on applying calcium phosphate coatings to metallic glasses for use in artificial limbs. He received his master’s degree in Materials Science & Metallurgy from the University of Oxford. 

Michael J. Carrozza graduated first in his class from The John Marshall Law School and was the Editor-in-Chief of The John Marshall Review of Intellectual Property Law. Carrozza received awards throughout his law school career for his academic performances and worked with his law school’s patent clinic to help under-resourced inventors obtain patent protection. Before entering law school, he worked as a telecommunications technician with AT&T for nearly 15 years. There, he gained considerable experience with a wide range of technologies, including both analog and digital switching technologies, ISDN, Centrex, xDSL, frame relay, DS0/DS1, e911 and U-Verse®. As an undergraduate at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Carrozza studied electrical engineering, with a focus on signal processing and communications systems.  

Robert F. Kappers graduated as Valedictorian from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. While in law school, Kappers was a Notes & Comments Editor of the University of Cincinnati Law Review and an active member of the Intellectual Property Law Society. He received many awards for his academic success, including the Lawrence Maxwell Memorial Advocacy Prize for excellence in appellate advocacy. Prior to law school, Kappers completed his undergraduate degree at Ohio State University, where he majored in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. While at Ohio State, Kappers was nominated for the Dow Outstanding Junior Award, which recognizes a student in chemical engineering based on outstanding academic achievement and professional promise.
