Yaping Zhang Receives McAndrews’ 2014 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship

05.09.14

CHICAGO, IL. – May 9, 2014 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy, a leading national law firm specializing solely in intellectual property and complex technology, has announced today that Yaping Zhang, a Juris Doctor candidate at Emory School of Law, is the recipient of the firm’s 2014 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship. Zhang was selected from a pool of competitive and talented candidates from some of the best law schools in the country.

Zhang received her B.Sc. degree in Microelectronics, a degree that is an intersection between electrical and mechanical engineering, from Peking University in Beijing, China, and her MPhil degree in political thought and intellectual history from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. After that, Zhang served as a research assistant at Eco-Forum Global in Beijing and, most recently, was an English teacher at New Oriental Education and Technology Group, where she trained more than 700 students. Zhang, who speaks Chinese, Korean, Spanish and German, is committed to pursuing a career in IP law.

The annual Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship was created because of McAndrews, Held & Malloy’s unfailing commitment to promoting diversity in the field of IP law. As the recipient of the fellowship, Zhang will receive a $5,000 stipend and a paid summer clerkship. The fellowship is open only to first-year law students attending an ABA-accredited law school, and who possess a diverse background and bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. Zhang will have the opportunity to gain experience on a wide range of intellectual property cases, and work closely with a mentor who will facilitate her personal growth and learning. She will also eligible to receive an invitation to return to the firm for a second summer.

“Yaping was the quintessential candidate,” said Sharon A. Hwang, a McAndrews, Held & Malloy shareholder and senior member of its Diversity Committee. “Her relevant experience and education already mirrors the educational and professional backgrounds of many of our attorneys and staff. We are all looking forward to welcoming Yaping to the office this summer and helping her understand how we build and execute legal strategies that achieve our clients’ business goals.”
