McAndrews shareholders Herbert D. Hart III and Edward A. Mas II have been named “U.S. Life Science Stars” in the 2014 edition of LMG Life Sciences. The annual guide highlights the top firms and individuals who specialize in four main practice areas: Regulatory, Intellectual Property, Finance & Transactional, and Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement.

Research for the guide is based on nearly 1,000 interviews and surveys with leading lawyers and in-house counsel. In order to be selected as a “Life Science Star,” which honors the best individual talent within each of the four practice areas, candidates must be recommended consistently as reputable and effective attorneys servicing the industry. Both Hart and Mas were recognized within the IP category.

With decades of experience, Hart is a highly regarded and well-known Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) trial attorney. He regularly litigates cases before the PTAB and advises and represents clients in post-grant proceedings under the American Invents Act. According to the LMG guide, Hart’s “experience in the fields of chemistry and biotechnology underlies his expertise in protecting a wide range of life science inventions.”

Likewise, Mas was also praised in the life science arena, particularly for his successful defense of multiple patent infringement suits on behalf of his long-term client Abbott Labs. His trial and appellate litigation practice has focused on complex patent- and technology-related litigation for more than 20 years. Mas has served as lead trial counsel in numerous patent infringement suits from coast to coast and has been involved in multimillion dollar verdicts, awards, and settlements.

Also within the Intellectual Property category of the LMG Life Sciences guide, McAndrews was recognized for its litigation practice, which includes market segments such as ANDA, biologics, ITC, PTAB, post-grant and bet-the-company patent litigation. One industry peer speaking on the firm described its IP capabilities as top tier. The peer also added that “they always get the guys we want at our firm,” indicating the firm-wide hiring policy that has seen the acquisition of top-tier IP practitioners specializing in litigation, portfolio management and due diligence.
