McAndrews, Held & Malloy shareholders Christopher P. Singer, Ph.D., and Nabeela Rasheed, Ph.D., participated in PLI’s Fundamentals of Patent Prosecution 2016: A Boot Camp for Claim Drafting & Amendment Writing, May 10-12, 2016, in Chicago.

The three-day program – designed for patent prosecuting and litigating attorneys and patent agents –featured lectures each morning, followed by interactive clinic sessions in the afternoon. The event focused entirely on the patent application process – from invention disclosure and patent preparation (Day 1), through prosecution, issuance and beyond (Day 2) to litigation and opinion drafting (Day 3).

Attendees also learned how to:

  • Sharpen their patent writing skills with seasoned patent prosecutors
  • Prepare a successful patent application and avoid common mistakes during patent prosecution
  • Master lessons from litigation and how to avoid patent prosecution pitfalls

Specifically, Dr. Rasheed led a session on claim drafting, which covered claim drafting principles and formats; preparing claims in different statutory classes; and filing the application. Dr. Singer served as a clinic instructor, and worked one-on-one with attendees to review and analyze their drafted claims to a sample invention.
