McAndrews, Held & Malloy Attorneys Selected for Inclusion in the 2015 Edition of Best Lawyers in America®
CHICAGO, IL – September 22, 2014 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy, a leading intellectual property law firm, announced today that founding partners Timothy J. Malloy and John J. Held and shareholder Troy A. Groetken were once again selected by their peers for inclusion in this year’s Best Lawyers in America® edition. All three attorneys have been previously recognized as Best Lawyers in the fields of patent, trademark and litigation law.
Best Lawyers is one of the oldest and most respected peer-reviewed publications in the legal profession. Inclusion in the 2015 edition is based on nearly five million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers. Best Lawyers is regarded by both clients and legal professionals as a significant honor, since leading lawyers vote for their peers to be listed and are not permitted to pay any fee to participate.
Timothy J. Malloy has been listed in Best Lawyers since 1999. Nationally recognized for his IP litigation successes, Malloy has been involved in numerous multi-million-dollar verdicts, awards and settlements, and has served as lead counsel in IP-related trials throughout the country. His professional highlights include arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of Eli Lilly and Company the leading case directed to the scope of patent protection for medical devices, obtaining a $166 million judgment for infringement, and obtaining a $5 million award of attorney’s fees for an exceptional case. In 2013, Malloy was featured in the inaugural “IAM 1,000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners.” He was also listed by Chambers USA as one of the top IP trial lawyers in Illinois and characterized as an “Outstanding Trial Lawyer,” and has been designated a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a trial lawyer honorary society composed of less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers. Malloy recently received the “Mentor Merit Award” from LINK Unlimited Scholars for 28 consecutive years of service.
John J. Held was first included in the Best Lawyers listing in 2006. He counsels and works with clients concerning the scope and protection of their patent, trademark and copyright rights, and the enforcement and licensing of their IP rights. Held has successfully counseled clients in numerous patent, trademark and copyright infringement actions (jury trials, bench trials and mediations) and in Patent and Trademark Office patent appeals, patent interferences and trademark oppositions/cancellation proceedings. His other IP counseling, procurement and enforcement activities have focused on products in a wide spectrum of industries, including automotive parts and equipment, web handling and processing equipment, software products, refuse handling equipment, electronic receptacles and fittings, computer jukeboxes and games, sporting goods and consumer products. In addition, Held has been and is involved with a variety of activities with local professional bar associations, his alma mater and the Chicagoland community.
Troy A. Groetken has been listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America since 2012. He has more than 18 years of experience in the intellectual property field and more than 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnological and chemical fields. As a registered U.S. patent practitioner, Groetken is considered by his clients and peers as a “trusted and ‘go-to’ IP source” who regularly counsels international and Fortune 100 and 500 companies regarding advanced patent litigation and procurement matters; advises upon global licensing, acquisition and divestiture issues coordinated with client-centered business modeling and approaches; and analyzes and addresses complex global intellectual property transactional issues, including due diligence analysis, valuation assessment, competitive landscape review, white space analysis, opinion development and global portfolio management. He was named a “Rising Star” by the Illinois Super Lawyers independent survey in 2008 and 2009, and was included as one of the Law Bulletin Publishing Company’s “40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty to Watch.” Prior to practicing patent law, Groetken worked as a clinical consultant pharmacist.
