Annual List Recognizes the Most Talented Attorneys in the State

CHICAGO, IL – November 18, 2016 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy Partner Malaika Tyson, Ph.D., was selected as one of the Law Bulletin Publishing Company’s “40 Attorneys Under 40 to Watch” for 2016. Tyson was chosen from an applicant pool of more than 1,400 nominations as one of the most talented young attorneys practicing law in Illinois. As part of the nomination process, firms cannot nominate their attorneys. As such, Tyson was nominated by her peers, clients and professional acquaintances from other firms – an impressive feat for any attorney.

At McAndrews, Tyson’s practice focuses on corporate IP and patent protection strategies, which include competitive analysis and portfolio management, due diligence and patent and trademark prosecution. While she represents clients in a variety of areas, her specialty is in the consumer goods, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries.

When asked about her work ethic and service, a client of Tyson’s said, “She is very dependable and highly responsive. She provides consistent, high-quality work.”

In addition to her work with McAndrews, Tyson is highly active within the legal community. She recently chaired the Associate Board for the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms. Tyson also currently serves as a co-chair of AIPLA’s PTAB Biotechnology Subcommittee, Vice-Chair of the ABA-IPL Patent Legislation Committee and Vice-Chair of Bottom Line Chicago’s Emerging Leaders Board. In what spare time she has, Tyson provides pro bono services at the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Bethel New Life in the Austin neighborhood, and regularly speaks at conferences and expos.

Her skills and dedication have made an impression on her peers, with one stating, “If I was in-house counsel, she would be one of the first people I call in an IP-matter.”

Tyson received her J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School and earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry (Analytical) from Purdue University. Before joining McAndrews, she worked at Sigma-Aldrich Biotechnology as a Senior Research and Development Scientist in the Proteomics group.

“We extend our deepest congratulations to Malaika on her ‘40 Under 40’ selection. We would have nominated her if we could, but thankfully her peers and clients recognize her excellent work, her strong dedication to IP law and her support of diversity in the field,” said McAndrews Shareholder and Firm President Robert A. Surrette. “This is a great honor not only for Malaika but also for our firm as she joins the ranks of the many other McAndrews’ attorneys who have previously received this same recognition.”
