Thirteen McAndrews Attorneys Recognized as Illinois Super Lawyers and Rising Stars

CHICAGO, IL – January 17, 2013 – McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. announced today that five of the firm’s shareholders have been named Illinois Super Lawyers and eight McAndrews attorneys have been selected as Illinois Rising Stars. According to the publisher, the rankings recognize attorneys who have distinguished themselves within their practices and include a rigorous selection process that involves third-party validation of the attorneys’ professional accomplishments. All 13 McAndrews attorneys will be featured in the February issue of Chicago magazine, in addition to the stand-alone 2013 Illinois Super Lawyers publication.

In a state-wide nomination process, honorees are selected and then evaluated by their peers in their practice area. Less than five percent of the state’s total lawyers are selected as Super Lawyers each year.

McAndrews attorneys selected as Rising Stars for 2013 in intellectual property law or litigation are shareholders Christopher V. CaraniSandra A. FrantzenScott P. McBride, David Z. Petty, and Christopher M. Scharff, partner James L. Davis, Jr., and associate Stephen M. Wurth.  Rising Stars are the state’s best attorneys who are age 40 or younger, or have been practicing law for 10 years or less.  No more than two-and-a-half percent of the total lawyers in any state are named to the list.

Nationally recognized for his intellectual property litigation successes, Timothy J. Malloy has been involved in numerous multi-million-dollar verdicts, awards and settlements and has served as lead counsel in trials throughout the country. His professional highlights include arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of Eli Lilly and Company the leading case directed to the scope of patent protection for medical devices. Malloy has been listed in Best Lawyers since 1999, and in 2012 was featured in the inaugural IAM 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners. He is also a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a trial lawyer honorary society composed of less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers.

Patrick J. Arnold, Jr., provides intellectual property counsel to a diverse lineup of clients ranging from leading medical device companies and non-surgical medical equipment manufacturers to entertainment resorts and automotive aftermarket manufacturers. His practice is focused on patent, trademark and copyright litigation and procurement, and involves many areas of technology, including complicated materials handling systems, automated chemical additive systems and mail sorting systems. He also counsels clients on the development and management of patent and trademark portfolios, and the negotiation of licensing agreements. Arnold has tried several cases before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and recently won an appeal there for a client in the automotive aftermarket industry.

Lawrence M. Jarvis has successfully represented clients in the areas of patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and computer law, among others, focusing on litigation and patent and trademark prosecution. One of the firm’s co-founders, his experience involves products such as the first portable computer, which was developed in 1950, LED printers, hand-held calculators, pacemakers, defibrillators, fiber optics, digital cellular telephone communications, anti-virus software, networked casino gambling machines, auto test equipment and night vision intensifiers.

Greg Vogler is one of the firm’s co-founders. He focuses on patent, trade secret and trademark litigation, as well as IP due diligence related to acquisitions and mergers. He represents owners and alleged infringers in all phases of litigation, including jury and bench trials, ITC proceedings, arbitration and mediation. His litigation experience spans diverse technologies and he has worked extensively on medical device patent cases. In 2012, as lead trial lawyer Vogler won a significant ITC trade secret case obtaining a 10-year Exclusion Order against the importation of cast steel railway wheels. He has argued over 10 times before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

George Wheeler counsels corporate clients in a wide variety of patent matters involving diverse chemical, mechanical and medical technologies, including over 25 ex parte reexaminations and several inter partes reexaminations. His specialty is patent analysis and prosecution, both for patent owners and alleged patent infringers. In 2011, he was named a Top Patent Prosecutor by PatentBuddy®, an honor achieved by only two percent of U.S. patent practitioners.  Prior to McAndrews, Wheeler worked as an in-house patent attorney at The Procter & Gamble Company and Morton Thiokol, Inc.

Christopher V. Carani is a leading authority in the field of design law and currently chairs the American Bar Association’s Committee on Design Rights. He has litigated numerous disputes regarding design rights and has served as a legal consultant and expert witness in design law cases. In Egyptian Goddess v. Swisa, a case that reshaped the law on design patents, Carani represented the amicus curiae American Intellectual Property Law Association at both the petition and en banc phases. Additionally, his insights on the implications of the Apple v. Samsung patent litigation trial were featured in major news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, and on national TV networks such as CNN and BBC, among others.

Sandra A. Frantzen focuses on patent, trademark and copyright litigation and client counseling. Serving clients in a variety of industries with a heavy focus on medical devices and pharmaceuticals, Frantzen advises clients on intellectual property procurement and strategy, and has litigated cases involving damages in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Frantzen has repeatedly been recognized by Super Lawyers for her achievements. In 2012, she was asked by the Department of State to present a program on intellectual property that was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Jordan. She currently serves as Vice President of the Arab American Bar Association of Illinois.

Scott P. McBride focuses on patent litigation and works with a wide array of technologies, with an emphasis on medical devices. He has first-chaired complex patent, trademark and copyright actions, and has prosecuted and defended several patent infringement cases involving up to multiple billions of dollars in accused product. McBride delivers exceptional results for his clients, which include obtaining one of the top 10 patent awards in history at that time, numerous awards of summary judgment, and several exceptional case findings, with awards of attorney’s fees in the millions of dollars.  He has been invited to speak numerous times before national audiences regarding the 2011 America Invents Act, and was recently admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

David Z. Petty’s practice covers all areas of intellectual property law, including patent, trademark and copyright litigation, patent prosecution, licensing and opinion work. His practice has involved many diverse areas of technology such as contact lenses, lighting systems, electrotherapeutic devices, video poker machines, computer jukeboxes, medical devices and powered wheelchairs, to name just a few.

Nabeela Rasheed concentrates her practice on the acquisition and enforcement of intellectual property rights for her biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients. She provides counsel in all areas of global intellectual property portfolio management, including patent prosecution, validity and infringement opinions, patent opposition proceedings, reexamination, protests and interferences. With her Ph.D. in biochemistry, Dr. Rasheed focuses on biotechnology and traditional pharmaceutical and medical technologies, including recombinant proteins and methods of production and use of such compositions, humanized antibodies, diagnostics and therapeutic formulations. In 2012, she was appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to the Chicago Commission on Human Relations.

Christopher M. Scharff’s practice includes all areas of intellectual property, with an emphasis on patent litigation through discovery, trial and appeal.  He has represented clients in large-scale patent disputes on technologies as varied as orthopedic implants, spinal surgery devices, GPS hardware, chemical products, advanced materials, food processing and computer software.  He also has experience litigating Lanham Act, unfair competition, false advertising and antitrust disputes, and regularly counsels clients on intellectual property issues relating to mergers and acquisitions, and licensing negotiations, in addition to many other matters.

James L. Davis Jr.’s work includes patent litigation and prosecution, as well as other areas of intellectual property law.  He has litigated cases across the country on behalf of clients from around the world.  His experience extends to a broad range of technologies including computer and network security software, automobile electronics, cell phones, gaming consoles, cardiovascular stent systems, medical devices and medical records systems.

Stephen M. Wurth focuses primarily on patent and trademark litigation, and has invaluable experience drafting briefs and making arguments in federal court.  His practice also includes patent and trademark prosecution and due diligence matters.  He has worked with diverse technologies including high-definition television tuners, wireless networking, electronic financial exchanges, medical devices and pharmaceutical drugs.  Wurth has a degree in electrical engineering, and prior to law school worked for Accenture as an information technology consultant, where he designed and implemented technical solutions for the federal government.
